French actress and dancer, Leslie Caron, started her profession as a ballerina.
After discovering Caron performing with a ballet firm in France, Gene Kelly forged her within the 1951 musical An American in Paris. The starring position (initially meant for a pregnant Cyd Charisse) plucked Caron from obscurity and landed her a seven-year contract with MGM.
The sunshine of California, coupled with Hollywood’s gratuitous shows of wealth, was a tradition shock for Caron, who had beforehand been dwelling in Paris in the course of the German occupation.
