Do Not Spare Your self – The Marginalian

The one factor extra harmful than wanting to save lots of one other individual — a harmful want too typically mistaken for love — is wanting to save lots of your self, to spare your self the frustration and heartbreak and loss inseparable from being a creature with hopes and longings consistently colliding with actuality, with the indifference of time and likelihood, with the opposing hopes and longings of others.

We have now, in fact, at all times invented establishments of salvation — faith to save lots of us from our sins, remedy to save lots of us from our traumas, marriage to save lots of us from our loneliness — to be able to salve our struggling, which is the worth we pay for the fulness of dwelling. And salve it we should, but there is no such thing as a damnation larger than spending our allotted days within the catatonia of consolation and certainty, our internal lives automated by behavior and halogen lit by comfort. To attempt to save ourselves from the despair by which we contour hope, to spare ourselves the fertile doubt and the gasps of self-surprise by which we uncover who we actually are, is to dwell a secure distance from alive.

That’s what the Uruguayan novelist, journalist, and poet Mario Benedetti (September 14, 1920–Could 17, 2009) explores in his astonishing poem “No Te Salves” — half indictment, half invitation, reminding us that we most frequently break our hearts on the arduous edges of our personal concern of dwelling, on the components of us so petrified that they’ve turn into brittle to the contact of life, the contact of affection.

Since I didn’t really feel that the usual English translation fairly captures the urgency and intimacy of the unique language, I’ve translated it anew. It’s learn right here within the authentic Spanish by my pal Karen Maldonado (who launched me to the poem), in English and Bulgarian by me, and in Russian by my mom (who translated it into Russian and our native Bulgarian), to the sound of Bach’s Cello Suite No. 4 in E-Flat Main.

NO TE SALVES
por Mario Benedetti

No te quedes inmóvil
al borde del camino
no congeles el júbilo
no quieras con desgana
no te salves ahora
ni nunca
                    no te salves
no te llenes de calma
no reserves del mundo
sólo un rincón tranquilo
no dejes caer los párpados
pesados como juicios
no te quedes sin labios
no te duermas sin sueño
no te pienses sin sangre
no te juzgues sin tiempo

pero si

pese a todo no puedes evitarlo
y congelas el júbilo
y quieres con desgana
y te salvas ahora
y te llenas de calma
y reservas del mundo
sólo un rincón tranquilo
y dejas caer los párpados
pesados como juicios
y te secas sin labios
y te duermes sin sueño
y te piensas sin sangre
y te juzgas sin tiempo
y te quedas inmóvil
al borde del camino
y te salvas
          entonces
no te quedes conmigo.

DO NOT SPARE YOURSELF
by Mario Benedetti
translated by Maria Popova

Don’t stand immobile
by the aspect of the street
don’t petrify your pleasure
don’t want with reserve
don’t spare your self now
or ever
          don’t spare your self
don’t replenish on tranquility
don’t declare from the world
solely a quiet nook
don’t let your eyelids fall
heavy as judgments
don’t stay lipless
don’t go to sleep unready to dream
don’t suppose your self cold
don’t deem your self out of time

but when
regardless of all of it you possibly can’t assist it
and petrify your pleasure
and want with reserve
and spare your self now
and replenish on tranquility
and declare from the world
solely a quiet nook
and let your eyelids fall
heavy as judgments
and stay lipless
and go to sleep unready to dream
and suppose your self cold
and deem your self out of time
and stand immobile
on the aspect of the street
and you’ve got been spared
          then
don’t stay with me.
